Helping Galloway step into the spotlight

National Parks could play a crucial role in the future of our rural areas. We believe that Galloway is ideally placed to be Scotland’s next National Park, and we now know that lots of you agree with this.

South-West Scotland has a unique story and a distinctive character, distilled by centuries of migration, trade and conflict. Our landscape of wild mountains, forests and moors is bordered by a rich, historic coastline of sandy bays and wide, distant horizons where the sky meets the sea. We’re all proud of this place, and perhaps it’s time we shared it with the world.

We need your help to create a National Park at the heart of a sustainable future for Galloway

Our discussion paper was published in October 2017 and we carried out the largest community engagement exercise ever run by a voluntary organisation.  With over 100 meetings and a lively discussion on social media we gathered in the views from every community in the area.  What you told us was that 84% of you agree or strongly agree that Galloway should become a National Park.

That's why we are now campaigning for Galloway to become Scotland’s third National Park – and we still need your help.

We have set out the case in “Galloway National Park - it’s our time”. If you would prefer a hard copy of the report, then contact us and we will send you one.

We accept that Government will want to be satisfied that the investment required really will pay off so as a first step we have asked Scottish Government to commission an independent publicly-led feasibility study to examine the case in more detail.

The Minister responsible for this is Mairi Gougeon, Minister for Rural Affairs and the Natural Environment and she met us at the end of April when we presented the new report to her with our request for the feasibility study.  She is now considering what to do and we need everyone who supports this idea to email or write to her and to your MSPs.

Now is the time to speak up for Galloway!
